1. What Cookies Are
Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. They allow a site to recognize your browser across requests, remember preferences, and, in the case of analytics or advertising cookies, help site operators and their partners understand usage patterns or deliver relevant advertising.
For example, the glimmer_consent cookie referenced in Section 3 below does nothing more than store the choice you made in our cookie banner, so that the banner does not reappear on every page load; it contains no personal identifiers beyond a randomly generated preference string. Cookies set directly by this Site are known as "first-party" cookies, while those set by a service we embed, such as our analytics provider or advertising network, are known as "third-party" cookies and are described further in Section 4. Under Indonesia's Personal Data Protection Law (Law No. 27 of 2022), information collected through cookies that can reasonably be linked to an identifiable individual is treated as personal data, and our processing of it is governed by the same principles described in our Privacy Policy. Some cookies are deleted automatically when you close your browser, referred to as "session cookies," while others persist on your device for a defined period, referred to as "persistent cookies," until they expire or you delete them manually. Similar technologies, such as browser local storage and pixel tags embedded in our occasional email newsletter, may be used alongside cookies for closely related purposes, such as remembering interface preferences or measuring whether a newsletter was opened.
2. Categories of Cookies We Use
| Category | Purpose | Can Be Disabled? |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Required for basic site functionality, such as remembering your cookie consent choice | No — required for the site to function |
| Analytics | Helps us understand which articles are read and how visitors navigate the site, in aggregate | Yes |
| Advertising | Used by our advertising network to display and measure relevant display ads | Yes |
| Preference | Remembers minor settings, such as whether the mobile menu was previously opened | Yes |
A few practical notes on how these categories apply in practice:
- a) Essential cookies are exempt from the consent requirement under Indonesian and most international cookie frameworks, because the Site cannot function as intended without them; refusing them through browser settings may cause the cookie banner to reappear repeatedly.
- b) Analytics cookies on this Site are configured, where technically supported by our provider, to use IP masking so that the last segment of your IP address is removed before any aggregation takes place.
- c) Advertising cookies are only set after you have given affirmative consent through our cookie banner; until consent is given, our advertising network serves only non-personalized, contextual advertising based on page content rather than browsing history.
- d) Preference cookies typically expire within 30 to 90 days and store only interface-level choices, never account credentials or payment information, since this Site does not process either.
3. Specific Cookies in Use
| Cookie Name | Category | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| glimmer_consent | Essential | 12 months |
| glimmer_session | Essential | Session (deleted on browser close) |
| _ga, _ga_* | Analytics | Up to 24 months |
| _gid | Analytics | 24 hours |
| ad_pref_id | Advertising | Up to 13 months |
To put these retention periods in context: the _ga and _ga_* identifiers are generated by our analytics provider to distinguish unique visitors across sessions and are renewed each time you return to the Site within the retention window, effectively resetting the 24-month countdown on repeat visits. The shorter-lived _gid cookie distinguishes visits within a single day for the purpose of session counting and is not combined with advertising data. The ad_pref_id cookie, by contrast, is scoped specifically to advertising personalization and can be cleared independently of analytics cookies through most browsers' privacy settings without affecting your ability to read articles. Where a cookie in this table is provided by a third party rather than set directly by glimmer.id, its retention period is determined by that third party's own policy and may be updated by them without prior notice to us; we review this table periodically to keep it accurate and update it when we become aware of a change.
4. Third-Party Cookies
Our analytics provider and advertising network may set their own cookies when you visit this Site, governed by their respective privacy policies. We do not control the retention periods or use of data by these third parties beyond the scope of our agreements with them.
Our current analytics provider is Google Analytics, operated by Google Ireland Limited, and our current advertising network is Google AdSense; both may process data on servers located outside Indonesia, including in the United States and within the European Union, under their respective standard contractual safeguards. We do not receive the raw browsing data these providers collect about individual users; we only receive aggregated or pseudonymized reporting, such as the number of visitors to a given article in a given week. Because these providers operate independently of Glimmer, any request to access, correct, or delete data held directly within their own systems — as opposed to data we hold ourselves — should generally be directed to the provider in question using the tools they make available, such as Google's Ad Settings page, in addition to contacting us. We periodically review the list of third-party services embedded on this Site and will update this policy within a reasonable time if a provider is added, removed, or replaced.
5. Managing Cookies in Your Browser
Most browsers allow you to refuse or delete cookies through their settings menu. Disabling essential cookies may affect the functionality of this Site. Disabling analytics or advertising cookies will not affect your ability to read articles, but may result in less relevant advertising or reduced data for our own editorial planning.
Because cookie controls are managed by your browser rather than by this Site, the exact steps differ slightly between browsers and are generally found under a "Privacy," "Security," or "Cookies and site data" menu:
- a) In Google Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Cookies and other site data.
- b) In Mozilla Firefox: Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data.
- c) In Safari on macOS or iOS: Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data.
- d) In Microsoft Edge: Settings > Cookies and site permissions.
You may also withdraw or adjust your consent for analytics and advertising cookies at any time by reopening the cookie banner, where available, or by clearing cookies for glimmer.id directly through your browser and revisiting the Site. Some browsers and privacy-focused browser extensions allow blocking third-party cookies by default while still permitting first-party cookies such as glimmer_consent and glimmer_session, which is generally the configuration we would recommend for readers who wish to limit tracking while retaining normal site functionality.
6. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as our use of cookies or similar technologies changes. The "Last updated" date above reflects the most recent revision.
We do not anticipate frequent changes to our use of cookies, but we may update this policy if we change analytics or advertising providers, add a new category of cookie, or are required to do so by a change in applicable law. Material changes, such as the introduction of a new category of tracking not previously disclosed, will be accompanied by an update to the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, a renewed consent prompt. Below is a short log of recent substantive revisions to this policy for readers who wish to track changes over time:
- 3 September 2026: Clarified retention periods for analytics cookies and added the specific cookie-name table in Section 3.
- 18 June 2026: Updated the advertising cookie description to reflect the switch to consent-gated personalization described in Section 2.
- 2 February 2026: Initial publication of this Cookie Policy alongside the Site's Privacy Policy.
We encourage readers to revisit this page periodically rather than relying solely on notifications, since minor clarifications that do not change the substance of our practices may not always trigger a renewed consent prompt.
